After the test on Thursday both new players said they had a hard time analyzing how to min/max the game and that it was difficult to evaluate Victory conditions. They were into the each round VP cards being scored and I think the scoring of hexes per turn is right in line with that.
I think have the 3VP most of rewards is problematic because it is a very difficult thing to analyze if you will or won’t achieve this. It can be done but requires looking at everyone’s current resources, their collection sites, and evaluating your own. That is a lot of looking at collection sites for something that will still remain nebulous. I feel that:
1. We should go back to 1 VP for each 2 food.
2. There should be no VP for cards at end of game. (Less ways to earn VP the better.)
3. I think we could go back to 1 VP for each 5 larva or figure some other way to work a larva bonus.
I am attaching my current VP scoring aid for some feedback. It is rough and will be tidier but as you can see there is already a lot of ways to score VP and I really think that simplifying how players win is what will make this game a lot more approachable, fun and interesting.
That said we need to balance simplification with maintaining and encouraging strategies that we want players to pursue. I feel that with how quick MotA plays Victory should not be a ton of bookwork.
