I was messing around with some images and prototyping a little bit. Crystals are so essential to the concept of fairies and their magic that I think they will not be a gathered item but, instead, will be the very “power” (mana if you will) that allows characters to take actions (thus, crystal-shaped or crystalline dice of some sort). There are a few different directions in which we could take the gathering of materials:
(1) Components for spells.
(2) Items for a celebratory banquet (decorations, ingredients, etc.).
(3) Items for a fairy home (this would be taking the theme of the game in a slightly different direction).
I’m pretty interested in the idea of gathering spell components (I think we might still call them ingredients). Maybe there could be three types, or overarching categories, of magic to be worked: potions, pranks, and spells. Potions help your friends do things. Pranks prevent the crows from taking your items or otherwise ruining the celebration. Spells make the Solstice celebration ever more magical and memorable. Or maybe that delineation doesn’t really work, but it’s a thought.
For example, Recipes are goals that you are trying to fulfill by collecting ingredients and combining them. I do like the idea that no fairy can work magic by themselves, they need a friend or friends to do so. So you could have a recipe for a Sleeping Potion. It would list three ingredients: Stone, Feather, Mushroom. Maybe there is a dedicated place you get recipes, maybe there is a dedicated place you combine ingredients to complete them. I’m not sure. I do know that it will be more interesting and fun if there is action/tension each turn, and I can’t see too many turns passing by where you are simply traveling from locale to locale (unless, in terms of timeframe for the game, you are each only trying to complete one spell or something like that).
Anyway, food for thought.
