I made this gif to show how the pieces are put together. I’m writing out the steps too:
I’m gonna add a ton to this. this isn’t the finished article about how evolutions are made.
#13 Trophic, Fungus Cultivating Pharaoh Ant. The head of this is feeding on a larvae via thin fangs, the background of the thorax shows fungus being cultivated, and the abdomen has rings to denote importance. Count Dracula. Charactersitics of the atta species.
We start with black and white line drawings.
This layer is multiplied over the layers below it which provide the color. The transparency of these colored layers are controlled by alpha channels.
The backgrounds were created using a Macro lens that magnetically attached to an iphone. This allowed us to take close images of soil, sand and natural growth. Each card has a single macro photo as its background, and the entire ant spans all three.
The mushroom pattern is applied to the fungal ant as a screened layer. The brightness of each spot is controlled by an alpha channel.
Highlights and shadows were drawn onto tracing paper and then realigned with the original ant. The dark blue shadows multiplied, and the cream colored highlights are screened as layer effects.
Shadows are added along the edge of each card section to mute the background and a shadow the ant is determined using the alpha channels that determined the color layers.
The first frame is white so click it to see it “dance”.
